The ASEAN Quality Assurance Association (AQAA) stands as a dynamic professional network composed of alumni from the TrainIQA programme. More than a simple alumni group, AQAA represents a collective commitment to advancing academic excellence, institutional governance, and sustainable development across higher education in the ASEAN region. Its members, drawn from diverse universities and systems, share a common vision: to strengthen internal quality assurance (IQA) as the foundation for sustainable and globally competitive higher education.
AQAA’s significance lies in its ability to transform training outcomes into long‑term collaboration. By fostering peer learning, organizing workshops, and supporting institutional reforms, AQAA ensures that the legacy of TrainIQA continues to grow. The association has become a platform where professionals exchange best practices, benchmark standards, and advocate for stronger policies at both national and regional levels. In doing so, AQAA contributes not only to ASEAN’s educational development but also to the global movement toward excellence, integrity, and sustainability in academia.
Alumni Network and AQAA’s Role
Graduates of TrainIQA in ASEAN established AQAA to extend the impact of their training beyond the classroom. The association provides opportunities to:
- Share and adapt best practices in IQA.
- Collaborate on joint projects and research initiatives.
- Mentor new institutions seeking to build quality assurance systems.
- Influence policy by advising ministries and agencies.
- Disseminate knowledge through conferences, webinars, and workshops.
This alumni‑driven network has proven sustainable, continuing to influence higher education long after participants complete the course. AQAA’s strength lies in its collective expertise and its ability to mobilize regional cooperation.
TrainIQA Programme: The Foundation
TrainIQA (Training on Internal Quality Assurance) is a specialized course under the DIES programme (Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies), jointly coordinated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), with support from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The University of Potsdam plays a central role in curriculum design and delivery.
Conducted in ASEAN, SADC (Southern African Development Community), and CAMES (African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education) regions, TrainIQA equips universities with frameworks and competencies to strengthen IQA. Its multilingual and multi‑regional approach ensures accessibility while maintaining a unified vision of global quality assurance.
Impact on ASEAN Higher Education
Through AQAA, the benefits of TrainIQA are magnified. ASEAN universities now have trained personnel capable of designing and implementing IQA systems. Institutions benchmark against one another, fostering mutual learning and regional collaboration. Alumni influence national education policies, ensuring that quality assurance frameworks align with international standards. Moreover, AQAA promotes internationalization, making ASEAN universities more attractive partners for global cooperation.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite its achievements, AQAA faces challenges such as limited resources in some institutions, resistance to change, and the need for continuous professional development in areas like digital learning and artificial intelligence. Yet opportunities abound. By integrating quality assurance with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), AQAA can position ASEAN universities as leaders in addressing global challenges.
